The Gauntlet - Gems of Power and Regular Gems
Two separate gem systems live in The Gauntlet — Gems of Power (permanent ability unlocks, bought from King Rastakhan) and Regular Gems (socketable stat gems, refined via the .jc command). Read “The Gauntlet” in this Core Systems category first for how to reach Rastakhan and unlock Layers — this article only covers the gems themselves.
Gems of Power
Rastakhan sells a full page of “Gem of Power” items, each one a permanent, class-relevant ability unlock (Heroic Leap, Lay on Hands, Icebound Fortitude, Innervate, Water Shield, and more — one Gem per ability). Every single Gem of Power costs the same: 300 Soul Fragment, 4,000 Soul Sphere, and 250,000 Death Coin. This is a serious currency sink — budget for it once your Soul Fragment income is steady from repeat Gauntlet clears.
He also sells weapon enchants (Tier 1 All Stats and Greater Tier 1 All Stats, plus single-stat Speed/Critical Damage/Haste enchants) for Soul Fragments, all far cheaper than the Gems.
Regular Gems — the .jc command
Typing .jc opens the Jewelcrafter’s Bench, a crafting menu independent from Rastakhan’s shop. It refines two colors of socketable gem, Yellow (Haste) and Blue (Critical Strike), through five tiers each: Spirit Gem, Refined, Royal, Flawless Royal, and finally Perfect. Every refine step consumes 10 of the previous tier’s gem to produce 1 of the next tier.
You do not craft the very first tier from nothing — Yellow Spirit Gem Fragment and Blue Spirit Gem Fragment (the entry material for the whole chain) mainly come from Treasure Goblins in Mythic+ dungeons: a rare fleeing spawn that, when caught, has a chance to drop a scaling stack of Fragments (and occasionally a rarer pre-refined gem outright). Since these Fragments come from Mythic+, running keystones doubles as Jewelcrafting material farming.
Getting gems back out — Miser’s Gem Extractor
Miser’s Gem Extractor (40 Rift Shards from Miser’s Shop) lets you pull a socketed gem back out of any item and into your bags, so a gem is never wasted if you change gear or want to move it somewhere else. Right-click the Extractor, then click the item holding the gem — it lists every socketed gem on that item, pick the one you want back. The gem returns fully intact and the Extractor is consumed on use, one Extractor per extraction. This works on any socketed gem, not just the Yellow/Blue gems from this system.
Practical takeaway: Gems of Power are a long-term currency sink, not something you buy on your first visit — work toward them as your Soul Fragment income grows. Regular Gems are real itemization worth socketing as soon as you have them; if you ever need to reclaim one, Miser’s Gem Extractor means you are never locked into a choice.
What a Gem of Power is
Each one is another class’s passive or skill, unlocked for your character. Some solve real problems: a mana-hungry spec can fix its mana with Innervate.
