Corruption

MOTHER (subname “Item Enhancements”) sells 5 enchants for Shadow Essence, 50 each:

• Empowerment — +20 item level, stacks with itself. Does NOT count toward your Corruption total.

• Expident, Severe, Avoidant, Siphoner — these DO add Corruption when equipped. Siphoner, for example, adds +5 Corruption and grants +3% Leech.

Check your current total any time via the Character Panel (default key C).

Corruption effects trigger automatically at these totals, and get worse the higher your total climbs past each one:

• 1 Corruption — Grasping Tendrils: taking damage has a chance to slow you.
• 20 Corruption — Eye of Corruption: your spells/abilities have a chance to summon a damaging Eye that follows you.
• 40 Corruption — Grand Delusions: taking damage has a chance to summon a Thing From Beyond that chases you.
• 60 Corruption — Cascading Disaster: getting caught by the Thing From Beyond also inflicts Grasping Tendrils and Eye of Corruption at once.
• 80 Corruption — Inevitable Doom: all damage you take is increased and healing you receive is reduced.
• 200 Corruption — Inescapable Consequences: you lose 25% of your max health every second while in combat. Avoid reaching this at all costs.

Practical takeaway: Empowerment is free value with no downside, stack it everywhere. Corruption items are a real risk/reward tradeoff — a little (like one Siphoner for sustain) is usually worth it, but piling several on at once can push you into the harsher thresholds faster than you would expect.
